How to Fix Air Bubbles and Raised Flakes in an Epoxy Floor

Cross-rolling wet epoxy with a roller and scraping raised flakes on a garage floor

The two problems customers call us about most are air bubbles in the epoxy and, occasionally, flakes sticking up after the broadcast. Here is how we handle each one.

Air bubbles in the epoxy

Cross roll right after applying. The easiest way to deal with air bubbles is to cross roll the epoxy with an 18" roller right after you apply it.

Sand out any that are left. The next day, before you apply the next coat, sand out any air bubbles that remain.

Flakes sticking up

  1. Sand and scrape the flakes in both directions: north, south, east and west. Our Epoxy Vinyl Flake Industrial Scraper is made for this step.
  2. Get on the ground at eye level with the floor. Look for any flakes standing up perpendicular to the floor. Those are high spots to scrape down.
  3. Clear the loose flakes. Use a cordless leaf blower to push the loose flakes away.

Apply the top coat right after scraping

Apply PP-80 Polyaspartic immediately after scraping the flakes. This protects the flakes from discoloring from plasticizers in tires and from asphalt oils on the soles of shoes.
