Order too little flake and you'll have gaps in the floor. Order too much and you'll have leftover pounds in the shop. Here's how to estimate the right amount.
Choose how densely you'll broadcast
Color flake is sold by the pound, and how much you need depends on how densely you spread it:
- Full broadcast, about 12 sq ft per lb. Flakes go on until the floor won't take any more. Most garage floors use this, because it hides the base color and gives the most texture underfoot.
- Medium broadcast, about 17 sq ft per lb. A balanced look, with some of the base color still showing.
- Light broadcast, about 25 sq ft per lb. A decorative scatter over a colored base, where more of the base shows through.
For a 400 sq ft floor, that's about 33 lb at full broadcast, 24 lb at medium, or 16 lb at light. Round up, since coverage varies with the surface and how you apply the flakes.
Our Most Popular colors come in three sizes
- 20 lb box: about 240 sq ft at full broadcast, 340 at medium, and 500 at light. $2.99 per pound.
- 40 lb box: about 480 sq ft at full broadcast, 680 at medium, and 1,000 at light. $2.99 per pound.
- By the pound: $4.29 per pound, from a 10 lb minimum in 5 lb increments. Use this for touch-ups, sample boards, or finishing a floor. Buy by the box whenever you need 20 lb or more, since it costs less per pound.
Boxes and by-the-pound orders for these colors ship the same business day when ordered by 5:00 PM Central. Other special-order colors take a few weeks to ship, so check the product page for timing.
